About Me

Yet another blog from an ex-pat in France. You are probably sick of them. I’m not exactly sure if this one has a purpose - the idea is to write about Brittany, in particular Eastern Brittany, where I have lived since 2002.

How did I end up in France? Well, it was always somewhere I’d wanted to live again at some stage in my life, but following a rather miserable return to work after a massive 6 weeks maternity leave, with an new chauvanistic, mysogynistic boss, the plan happened sooner rather than later. Mr Wootton, thanks for being such a c*** manager, I have a lot to thank you for.

I now run quite a good little gite business and keep myself busy when not cleaning, making beds, washing, ironing, cutting grass, sorting out the pool etc., by teaching English to adults. I wouldn’t say I’m especially good at it, but it helps keep the brain activated and it is nice to talk about subjects other than the weather, the vegetable garden (or more precisely, my inability to cultivate one) and the price per litre of milk. And be paid for the pleasure, of course.

Hi Susan
I’ve been following your conversation with the avocat on his blog about the new regime. I think we will still be able to be on the régime Micro-BIC but we may have to have a “classement” such as Gites de France or “meublé de tourisme”. I’ve just asked at my mairie and it’s the local tourist office who can give you a “classement”. So that’s the route I’m going along. I think we will have to prove that we are “classé” with a certificate of some sort. What do you think?

@Debby Gamble: Hi Debby,
I’m not sure if they will require a classement, but if they do, I’d definitely go for one via the préfecture. I know I couldn’t get one from GdeF (a beam too low) or Clévacances (same reason) in one of my gites, but I think it is more straightforward to get one direct from the préfecture. As the maitre said, it is very grey at the moment who will fall into the category of ‘meublés de tourism” but it is gite owners like you that the amendment is trying to protect, it is trying to target the buy to let long term people. I’m actually a LMP and under the réel régime, so it doesn’t apply to me, but I know it applies to many gite owners I know and probably the majority of gite owners in France, that is why I am interested!
